Pico da Vara
At an altitude of 1105 m, the Pico da Vara is the highest point on the island of São Miguel and it is part of the Basalt Volcanic Complex of the Northeast, about 4 million years old. It has a mountainous relief, cut by deep ravines, where rivers of torrential regime, sometimes permanent, flow. It has about 1980 ha and a rich botanical and landscape landscaping.
Farol do Arnel no Nordeste
Farol do Arnel is located in the most northeast part of São Miguel Island – named Ponta do Arnel. It was start operating in November 26th of 1876, which was the first lighthouse implanted in the Azores. It was built in the nineteenth century in order to improve the Nordeste County by António Alves de Oliveira.
Farol do Arnel was suffering over the years several improvements and adaptations that allowed to keep the same functions and to make a landmark in the heritage of Nordeste County.
Gazebo Ponta do Sossego
The Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego, also located in Pedreira, a little further down the local road, offers a superb view over the coastal area, but the crown jewel are the well-tended-to gardens: the diversity is remarkable. Tended to all year around, this is undoubtedly the largest and most appreciated of all the municiplaity gardens.
As for the coastal view it is likewise breathtaking: one can spot Fajã do Araújo and Lombo Gordo beach.
